On 30 January, the Syrian Kurds’ authorities announced a “comprehensive agreement” reached with Syria’s government concerning reintegration of the Syrian Kurd-administered territory into the Syrian state.
The agreement includes clauses designed to secure the safety and status of the Kurds in Syria.
Employing a combination of military operations and diplomatic pressure, Syria’s government has achieved its objective of reintegration of the Kurdish areas.
This concludes the existence of the Syrian Kurdish-controlled territory as a separate geopolitical entity that emerged during the Syrian War.
The Syrian Kurds played a key role in the defeat of the Daesh territorial state, from the heroic defense of the city of Kobani, to the offensives that brought about Daesh’s downfall. The Kurds gained various successes against other factions of the Syrian War as well. The geopolitical reality that emerged after the fall of the Assad regime made it objectively impossible for the Syrian Kurds to retain a de facto independent state, making reintegration into Syria under agreed and beneficial conditions the only viable option for them.
