MENA Theater Update, 30 Mar. 2026

On 29 March 2026, Israel’s prime minister Netanyahu announced he had ordered Israeli military to expand security zone in southern Lebanon.

On 24 March, Israeli defense minister had said Israel would expand its area of control in southern Lebanon, in particular south of the Litani River.

The statements indicate that Israel’s ground operations in southern Lebanon launched in mid-March 2026 aim to take over a swath of territory that will serve as a buffer between Iran’s asset Hezbollah in Lebanon and Israel’s northern border.

The Israeli decision comes in the wake of the Lebanese government’s failure to prevent Hezbollah from functioning as Iran’s military asset operating in Lebanon.
