In March 2026, Russian sources reported the presence of Russian troops in Togo including its capital Lome.
In November 2025, Russia and Togo had finalized an agreement that granted Russian naval ships the use of the port of Lome. The agreement also provided “for Togolese soldiers to be trained by Russian instructors, as well as intelligence sharing and joint military exercises.”
Back in February 2024 reports had emerged “that a contingent of 30 Russian military advisers that recently arrived in Togo are helping Togolese troops build a new military camp on the border with Burkina Faso,” their purpose reportedly being “to defend against Salafi-jihadi attacks that largely emanate from Burkina Faso.”
Russian deliveries of military equipment to Togo began in late 2022.
