On 12 December 2024, Australia achieved an arrangement with Papua New Guinea, according to which the latter “will join Australia’s national rugby league competition” in exchange for its obligation not to enter a security agreement with China, and reaffirmations of “its commitment to Australia as its major security partner.”
Australia will provide $384 million “over ten years to set up the team” which will be based in Port Moresby and set to start competing in 2028.
