As reported on 21 April 2026, the United States “has suspended U.S. dollar shipments to Iraq and frozen security cooperation programs with its military, escalating the pressure on Baghdad to dismantle powerful Iranian-backed militias.”

The US is demanding from the Iraqi authorities for the Iran-affiliated groups’ attacks on the US assets to stop, and for Iraqi officials to “take steps to dismantle the armed groups.”

The Iran-affiliated military groups in Iraq have taken part in Iran’s war against the United States, firing at the American and Gulf Arab targets.
