Sub-Saharan African Theater Update, 29 Apr. 2026

On 25 April 2026, the Tuareg rebels launched an offensive against the Russian-aligned military junta of Mali, at the same time with some of the jihadist groups operating in the country.

That same day, the Tuaregs entered the town of Kidal – a key Tuareg center in northern Mali which had been under the control of the junta and Russian troops. Most of Kidal was taken by the rebels right away. The Malian and Russian forces were besieged by the Tuaregs at a base on the outskirts of the town. On 26 April, they surrendered the base to the Tuaregs in return for a safe retreat from Kidal.

In the subsequent days, Tuaregs further widened their area of control in northern Mali, taking some new territory from the junta and Russian forces.
