MENA Theater Update, 13 May 2026

Reuters reported on 12 May 2026 that Saudi Arabia had launched multiple strikes on Iran in late March 2026 in retaliation for Iranian attacks on the kingdom — the first time Saudi Arabia was known to have directly struck Iranian soil. Following the strikes, Iranian attacks on Saudi Arabia dropped sharply, from over 105 drone and missile strikes in the week of 25–31 March to just over 25 between 1–6 April. In the days immediately preceding the broader US–Iran ceasefire of 7 April, projectiles targeting Saudi Arabia were assessed to have originated from Iraq rather than Iran directly, indicating Tehran had curtailed its own strikes while allied groups continued to operate. On 12 April, Saudi Arabia summoned Iraq’s ambassador to protest attacks launched from Iraqi soil.
