The New York Times reported on 19 May 2026 that Israel and the United States had entered the 2026 war with a concrete regime change plan for Iran.
The Israeli plan envisioned the air campaign and killing of the supreme leader being followed by Kurdish military operations, influence campaigns, and infrastructure strikes in Iran sufficient to collapse the regime and allow an alternative government to take power. Beyond the air campaign and the killing of Ayatollah Khamenei on the war’s first day, the plan does not appear to have unfolded as intended.
