Australia and Fiji signed the Ocean of Peace Alliance on 6 July 2026 in Suva, a mutual defence treaty committing each country to “act to meet the common danger” in the event either was attacked. The treaty made Fiji Australia’s fourth formal ally, after the United States, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, and became Fiji’s first-ever formal alliance.
The agreement formes part of Australia’s effort to entrench itself as the security partner of choice for Pacific countries and to curb China’s expanding influence in the region, following Australia’s Nakamal Agreement with Vanuatu the previous week.
