Sub-Saharan African Theater Update, 6 July 2026

On 4 July 2026, the Tuareg rebels of the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) participated in coordinated insurgent attacks against positions of the Russian-aligned military junta of Mali in several parts of the country. An FLA spokesperson said that the group’s fighters had entered the town of Anefis in northern Mali.

On 5 July 2026, an analyst tracking the fighting reported that a Russian relief convoy, which had left Gao for Anefis, had been repeatedly ambushed by the insurgents on its way, suffering heavy losses while under constant observation by the insurgents’ drones. According to the same reporting, the insurgents had appeared to prepare a siege of the Malian and Russian forces remaining in Anefis.
