On 24 August 2026, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced new secondary sanctions targeting countries and entities doing business with Iran, dubbed “Operation Economic Outcast,” expanding sanctions to the fields of digital assets, technology, gold, aviation and shipping.
The Treasury Department also sanctioned nearly 60 entities, individuals and vessels involved in illicit procurement of nuclear and missile technology, cyber operations and oil smuggling.
Bessent said every country would be given a defined timeline to end its Iran-related business or face secondary sanctions.
