On 30 August 2026, US forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, the first confirmed US strike on Iran since late July. US Central Command said Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces had been preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the strait.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the strike had killed and wounded several of its servicemen and civilians.
The Revolutionary Guards retaliated by firing at US-linked bases: Jordan said it had intercepted eight missiles that entered its airspace, while the UAE air force said it had engaged a drone that had come from Iran.
Separately, as part of its continued campaign against ships not using the sea lane close to its coast, Iran had struck a tanker heading into the strait near Oman with a projectile on 29 August, the UK Maritime Trade Operations said.
