On 3 September 2026, the Houthis launched a ground offensive backed by rocket and drone attacks toward the Bab al-Mandab strait, clashing with forces loyal to the Saudi-backed government of Yemen around western Taiz. The Houthis moved to cut off supply routes to the government-held port city of Mokha and to seize elevated positions overlooking areas near the strait, from which they could threaten commercial shipping, according to military sources cited by AFP.

On 5 September 2026, Iran fired ballistic missiles at two US Navy warships — an aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer — in the Strait of Hormuz; both evaded the missiles, US Central Command said.
