Ukrainian personnel deployed in Mali said Ukraine had sent around 15 specialists there, as of September 2026, to assist the Tuareg rebels of the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) against Russian troops backing the Malian military junta. According to the same personnel, the Ukrainians were not directly participating in the frontline fighting. Instead, they were providing the Tuaregs with training and operational support, and were remotely coordinating some of the rebels’ drone missions.
The same Ukrainian personnel said Ukraine had also assisted the Tuareg rebels in the takeover of Kidal from Malian and Russian forces in April 2026.
