On 6 October 2026, the military junta of Mali announced that its forces had retaken the town of Kidal in the north of the country from the Tuareg rebels of the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). The junta said that its forces had carried out the operation with the help of the Russian Africa Corps.
The FLA said in a statement that it had withdrawn its forces from Kidal, with the Malian army entering the town without a fight.
